چکیده

Results from sampling for sardine (Sardina pilchardus) eggs at station L4 in the coastal Western English Channel over the period 1988–2008 are presented and discussed in relation to environmental conditions. As previously observed in this area, there is a summer spawning season (midMarch to early July) and one in the autumn (early September to mid-November). The historical trend for increasing autumn spawning has continued. The mean spawning temperatures were 12.6 and 14.58C for the summer and autumn seasons, respectively. Temperature was negatively correlated with summer egg abundance and positively with autumn egg abundance. A negative correlation between egg abundance and the North Atlantic Oscillation index suggested a link between egg numbers and plankton production.

Effect of bacterial epiflora on egg hatching of the Atlantic sardine (Sardina pilchardus).

The aim of this work was to study the influence of bacterial epiflora on egg hatching of the sardine (Sardina pilchardus) obtained from a natural environment (Ría de Vigo, Spain) during the spawning season of the sardine (from January to June). Total bacteria, viable bacteria or the presence of specific potential pathogens for eggs, such as Pseudoalteromonas piscicida and Tenacibaculum (Flexiba...

QUALITY DIFFERENCES ASSESSMENT IN CANNED SARDINE (Sardina pilchardus) BY FLUORESCENCE DETECTION

Chilled (0, 2, 6, 10, 13 and 15 days) and frozen (0, 0.5, 2, 4, 8 and 12 months) sardines were used to determine the influence of such storage times of fish over the quality of the final canned product. Traditional determinations of lipid quality (free fatty acids content, thiobarbituric acid index and polyene index) were studied and compared with the formation of fluorescent compounds expresse...

Signature of an early genetic bottleneck in a population of Moroccan sardines (Sardina pilchardus).

Fishery assessment models meant to determine sustainability of commercial marine fish failed to predict recent stock collapses due to overexploitation. One flaw of assessment models is that they strongly rely on catch and age-composition statistics, but largely ignore the genetic background of the studied populations. We examined population genetic structure of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in t...

Diet and feeding intensity of sardine Sardina pilchardus: correlation with satellite-derived chlorophyll data

Spatio-temporal variability of the diet of sardine Sardina pilchardus off Portugal was examined through analysis of the stomach contents of fish collected every 14 d from the west and south of Portugal during 2003/2004. Dietary composition of the modal sardine length class was assessed by determining the frequency of occurrence and carbon content of identified prey, and these 2 parameters were ...
